How do people think of Bmw AutoHex II and Bmw Explorer

I would like to know what you guys think of these 2 powerfull tools.
Witch one is better and why ?
What do you use and what would you recommend ?
The price difference between the 2 is very high, so i am looking to know in what direction to go.

How do people think of Bmw AutoHex II and Bmw Explorer-1

1.Interestingly I have been debating how to go too between the two. Unfortunately most reviews are not from those who have both. It is useless to read a post by one who has only one of the two rather than both because generally one praises what they have.

It is also useless to have 24/7 support for a tool that is not 100%. rather have no support for a tool that does what it is meant to do 100% all the time, than have to chase after customer service every now and then on teamviewer. For that reason I am not interested on which tool has better support.

I have experienced Autohex failing to change vin on a CAS3 so I am sceptic about it. Neither does it support some older E series ECUs. Not sure about Explorer though. It is as rare as hen’s teeth where i come from! A one on one comparison, like for like function wise would be useful from a user of both, but such is rare! I bet no business would sink so much money in two similar tools. We are left to figure it out from biased reviews all over.

 

2.Well they both have have functions that the other can’t do. I have explorer and main reason for that is that I don’t need yearly subscription, with low info from Autohex side on this subscription I chose for explorer. And it never failed on me, also support is there not always instand reply but I can live with that. Also it is impossible to find a tool that can do everything….

 

3.Autohex II isn’t the favorite tool for old CAS systems. For FEM/BDC is better than Explorer (no need for extra tools). Due to the high costs I have Autohex II, a friend of mine BMW Explorer. To be on the safe side for old CAS I use also ACDP von Yanhua, nice and smart.

 

4.Have bmweplorer full with a friend, very powerfull
Can’t do everything but most of what you need
Need to buy buy separately key programmer to program keys
So, yes more expensive but more functions
I would recommand to you bmwexplorer

5.The main use for these Tools will be ecu repair and ISN numbers and from tme to time a key….I have other programers for keys so that is not a problem
Most important are dead ecu’s and having the possibility to read out icn numbers and program ussed ecus to cars.

 

6.BMW-Explorer ISN reset:
Exx
6Hp – yes
8hp – no
Fxx
6hp – no
8hp -yes
In the future should appear reset 8hp in Exx.

same in Autohex

Also, In Autohex, you can not decrypt CAS4 with key, you need DME ISN, so if u have CAS4 with key, you can not edit ISN in it.

I heard ACDP can do that, not sure about BMW Explorer

but AH-s support is good, they work hard.

 

7.I have both of them and if you do lots BMW you need at least one.

Autohex2 – Very friendly interface it will help you a lot. I using it mainly for the ISN job and the key making. It does more ECU then the Explorer eg: MEV1723.
AKL for most of E series you can do entirely via OBD. Downgrade the CAS never failed for me. Even so you can easy fix it with Autohex.
CAS3 replacement is easy and you can do it via obd or on the bench
Programming function is handy due to you dont have to waste the time for fire up Ista P or others when needed.
It comes with all required cables and adapters and clear instruction.
Support friendly, They will never ignore any of your questions via Skype, always help you when you get in trouble.
Yearly subscription – this is nothing new when you use proper tools. It will bring you much more benefits. All updates for free.

Bmw Explorer – another grate tool. It has more function such as reset mileage for the cars.
It comes with no adapters if you need to do ECU on the bench you need to make them self – so waste the time for me – and also purchase ECU Explorer
Software comes with the dongle ( annoying) Scanning F series it takes very long time crashing at the end so need to do all from beginning.
During the CAS downgrade it sometimes stopped in the middle of the process without no reason – support ignore – CAS dead.
Doing mileage reset on Mini it wiped the mileage completely so I had to fix the epprom…..uff, all dash out.
Bmw Explorer is twice more expensive then Autohex and is no for beginners. If you get in trouble support wont help you.
Anything you decide you still need some others tools as they both not doing everything. I hope I helped with my experience

 

8.In short this is unfair comparison, more details is below:
As we saw in the previous comments people are talking only on the  ISN function or the key programming feature. Although we believe Autohex II is more advanced in these 2 fields, please note that this is just 2 functions while Autohex II is a TOTAL SOULTION for BMW, I will sort some examples of what members here missed to mention:
– Individual programing/coding (based on FA calculation): When you do jobs in keys or ISN, problems may happen and I am sure you all faced such cases , you probably will need to reflash and encode the Ecu. Here Autohex can do the job precisely.
Using autohex is one of the safest way of flashing ECU’s in BMW models we have situations even when dealer corrupted ECU’s and autohex fixed it back to original state.
Also This function will let you replace not only used DME,CAS but any other module like KOMBI, NBT, EGS, ESP, Steering,… etc, I don’t think other tools have such features.

– Manual coding (also calculated from FA) and FA manager in autohex helps to do retrofits  in E and F series and modify ecu configurations.

– ISN tricore boot mode: Autohex II covers all DMEs/DDEs that are not supported by OBD in F series.

– BDM functions (for CAS read/write EEPROM/FLASH), this is a new function comes with HexTag (new tool for key programming and BDM functions), we start delivering new orders of Autohex II with Hextag instead of HTag Pro key programmer. This tool will read all versions of CAS (including CAS4+) without removing any part from the CAS.

Speaking on ISN function we don’t think any of the tools in market can EDIT ISN for continental ECU’s like MSV90,87,85 etc. in F series. you can name tools which can read isn from these ECU’s but none of them allows yout to edit ISN from these DME’s.so it shows Autohex covers a good number DME/DDE for ISN reading,writing even through tricore reading method.

Now on yearly subscription we are maintaining a good number of servers for online programming function and all other online functions in autohex, tools which misses online programming feature can avoid this.Through subscription renewal we are also giving extended hardware warranty which covers servicing of tool even after any number of years free of cost and about the technical support we don’t need to say anything customers has clarified it in previous comments.

With this yearly subscription we never charges even a single penny for each and every new features we release like EGS 8HP,FEM/BDC unlock, New DME ISN read/write etc etc, while other tools charge at least 2000$ of each feature.
so we believe all this clarifies what autohex has when comparing with any of the tool in market.

 

9.I though by now people have realized that Autohex is much better than explorer.

For me personally Autohex is far much better than Explorer.
I have Autohex Full and my friend have Explorer Full and i always rescue when it come to fem or bdc.
Cas is becoming and old module as there are many tools than can do cas module.
The best part people are always forgetting is that Autohex has more function than explorer.
with autohex you can do flashing, coding, any cas or fem or bdc replacement and adaption, egs,
all updates are for free, you can reset mileage very easy, and many more things you can do if you know how to use Autohex.
0j48005 vin is another friend of mine that i rescued and he also have full Explorer and he failed to make a key for a 2014 BMW X5 because explorer is saying he must update with BMW E-sys first,
0C39868 also another explorer full user failed to reset mileage for the bmw X5 2013 because explorer is saying he must update with BMW E-sys first also

i can put up a list of people or cars that explorer failed and i solve in less than 15 min

with my personal experience i will advise anyone to buy Autohex because i call it IDIOT PROOF, because it is the safest and most friendly and the support is always there.

11.BMW Explorer does have more features and has less chance of even to need support due to just functioning correctly. And yes BMW explorer has read write capability for ISN even beyond autohex which need support constantly.Just saying. Not that autohex is bad but it is lacking to the king BMW explorer in some areas. I explored whats needed beyond a basic tool for BMW keys etc and the Yanhau combined with a $3200 BMW explorer package has all functions you will need. PM me if interested in further details unfortunately needing tech support autohex is not in this package. In time I expect autohex with nice GUI and user friendly UI to catch up and perhaps maybe unseat the King BMW Explorer.

 

BMW explorer software isnt for the new user without training.The software is not UI friendly like Autohex. Only downside but I read all help files and practise before I try on clients car and so far everything works.

 

12.Well, after many months of deliberations and frustration with my chinese tools, I dived in. BMW explorer won it for me. I love the idea of incremental license. I choose what to add and what not to. I have yanhua mini, so dont need licences for N series dmes. Can use yanhua. Can use esys, so I dont need F series coding. Can make keys with yanhua too, or tango clone, BMW explorer also adds me key making E series free. When i need cas isn, i will use BMW Ex. Am excited. Watched a few videos of how it does EGS vin. Nice stuff.

A friend already has autohex anyway, so we will have between us an arsenal for BMW.

One user bought GM TECH2 (SP23-1) and one Opel 32MB Card in German. He feedback the software can cover Opel from 1997 to 2008 instead of 1997 to 2014. He connected GM Tech2, it failed to identify, he followed the instruction to do but got errors: hardware error;Your vehicle choice needs the candi.

Turn off the Tech2 and plug in the candi. After that, they carry out the vehicle choice as usual.

I picked up the Foxwell NT510 scanner for $140 off uobdii.com around 2 years ago and it’s great. It can’t code as well as Carly can but it gives a ton of useful info.

 

I don’t think there’s a good one stop shop if you’re interested in dealing with faults and coding.

I also have Carly. The Carly seems like a work in progress to me–the company while very responsive, seems like it’s still trying to figure stuff out. I’ve written to them multiple times about how to interpret or proceed based on something that did or didn’t happen after using their product. I know people swear by Carly, but I don’t care for it. Since I paid for it, I will still use it however.

From a diagnostics perspective, the NT-510 just seems like a more stable setup. I was in a situation where I needed reset the steering angle, which the Foxwell unit can do, but Carly cannot. So far, so good with regard to the Foxwell unit.

In my experience, I’d probably buy both Carly and an NT-510. If you use one versus and the other and are happy, that’s cool as well.

NT530 allows you to use the scan tool temporarily activate or control a vehicle system or component. With this diagnostic tool, the check of electronic components such as switches, sensors, relays, and actuators is made a simple task. It allows you to recalibrate, adapt or configure certain components after making repairs or replacement. Those test includes but not limited to register battery replacement, CAS reset,CO adjustment, delete transport model, disable/enable key.

Oil Service Reset:

Allows you to reset the service lamps on the instrument cluster.

Electronic Parking Brake Service:

Allows you to perform the service and maintenance of brake systems, including deactivation and activation of the brake control system, bleeding brake fluid, opening and closing brake pads, and setting brakes after disc or pad replacement, on BMW vehicles where electronic brake systems are fitted.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Programming:

Should I buy a dedicated VIDA laptop?

 

(friendly plug for my fellow VIDA gurus) I have nothing against the folks selling a ready to go laptop with VIDA already running on it. If you don’t currently have a laptop that can run VIDA, and don’t have a need in your personal life for a better computer, their solution is worth considering.

 

If you decide to go my route, you shouldn’t need to spend over $500 for a laptop, and I would NOT consider it a “VIDA only” computer. Consider it your new personal computer to use everyday. It’s a shame when people buy a nice laptop, and let it sit only to run VIDA. You paid for the computer, enjoy it. The way I’ve packaged VIDA in a Virtual Machine means essentially that the physical computer it runs on, is nothing more to VIDA than a CPU, RAM, and Hard Drive. So the better those 3 pieces of hardware, the faster VIDA will run.

What computer specs do you recommend?

  • Windows 7 or 10 any version. If you need a good copy of either, a windows 7 license is 20 bucks on eBay. Upgrading to win10 from 7 is still free
  • 8gb ram (4gb will work, but starting vida will take 10 minutes, and pulling codes ~5mins). Just spend the extra 50 bucks, life is too short
  • Dual or Quad core cpu over 2ghz (must be virtualization compatible, but I’ve never seen one that meets these specs and isn’t.)
  • ssd 120gb (can use a standard hdd, I personally do. To compensate in that case, get a USB3 64GB thumbdrive on Amazon for $17 like the “Samsung 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Fit (MUF-64BB/AM)”. unzip the Virtual machine to the USB drive, and run it from there. Now your VM is sitting on Solid State Flash Memory, talking directly to CPU and RAM. Blazing fast!

Can your vida software change the cars digital display units to Metric (km and Celsius)?

I’ve not done this, but the question isnt if my version can, it is “can vida change my display to metric” the answer will be the same for both. (My guess is yes)

Can I use your software to diagnose and fix the park assist error mentioned above? E.g. identify which sensor is at fault, etc.

It can diagnose anything your local Volvo dealership can. You will have all yhe information a dealership will have (though unfortunately it doesnt instantly make us master technicians haha). But you will have all info for research and diagnosis at your disposal

Story:

My daughter has just dropped off her 05 X3 for a few weeks as she has gone off on a trip. The car came with a punch list that I have started to work my way through (she lives over 1000Km away in a place with no dealers nearby, so trips here usually have a number of things that need looking at, as well as basic mtce).

 

One issue I can’t do much with without a scan tool is an airbag light – both dash and overhead are on, so pointing to the passenger air bag. A forum check show a few common airbag fault areas, with the seat sensor mat being a high suspect (the seatbelt lamp for the front passenger seat does not work as well, so I think that might point to the mat, which was subject to a 2008 recall, as a top candidate). A VIN check shows no outstanding recalls, so I expect the mat was fixed on recall by the original owner.

 

The dealer where I am wants an hour shop time ($130) just to read the code, which is v pricey if I need a 2nd read after any repair to reset the codes (I’m not interested in the kluge fix to bypass the sensor mat)

 

That leaves me looking for a way to check codes to try to pinpoint the fault location.

 

I have a BlueDriver by Lemur as well as generic ELM clones that I run with IOS and Android Apps. They are OK on new cars, but all will only read basic codes on the BMW (the same as they do with other older cars in the family fleet – 98 Jag XJ8, 99 Suburban and 06 Saab 95).

 

So … my question. Reading around for scanner options gives me a few possibles. I am a Mac user, so any of the laptop based ones are off the table, leaving me with the Foxwell NT520 as a top choice as I understand it will read many of the 2005 Model year BMW modules, including Airbag. It also pays for itself if I need codes read twice by the dealer and as I understand the Airbag module must be reset by a tool, at least one visit, most likely 2, is required.

 

A couple of questions:

  1. Are users of the Foxwell happy with it and will it truly read the functions listed for the 2005 X3?
  2. Has anyone used a Foxwell with one of the s/w modules for other makes as well, and do they also work well? As an example, I would really like to read misfire data on my 99 suburban as I think it has a misfire that isn’t enough to set codes or be able to read more data on the Saab than just generic OBD.

 

 

Comments appreciated. If I order this week, I should be able to get a unit and make the repair before the car travels north again

 

 

Update – I ended up buying a Foxwell NT510 and am happy with it.

It has an impressive range of capabilities, far more than my other ELM 327 based apps, reading a large range of modules on the car and displaying many “hidden” codes – ie codes that don’t set any dash lamp errors.

2 features that came in especially handy were the airbag test and transfer case test functions.

The airbag test confirmed that the issue with the airbag was a faulty passenger seat mat sensor. The error can’t be reset without replacement (or putting in the kluge that masks the fault and makes the module think things are OK). As the issue is limited to the sensor only and the airbag is still functional, this gives some time to decide how / when to make the fix. At lest we know that the car has airbags in the event of a collision – all that will happen is the passenger bag will deploy even if the seat is empty.

More importantly, the transfer case tests showed that the fluid required change (code 54C6 was set). Once I decided to change it, this lead me to also pull the actuator motor on spec to make sure the gear wheel that has caused problems for many was OK (there were no codes that indicated it was bad). I’m glad I did as I found the gear was worn to the point it was only a matter of time until it failed to operate and the car defaulted to the limp home state when running the calibration routine (which it does on every shut down). For these things alone, the tool has paid for itself.

Part 3: HEXTAG By Microtronik make a key with AUTOHEX II

HEXTAG By Microtronik is only reset key for BMW. To make a key you’ll need AUTOHEX II.

Hextag is bdm tool. Where you’ll need it if you gonna do cas4+. It have an option to reset some keys not only bmw. But there no option to make keys.
Autohex over obd its only e series, f series need take modules out.

 

Hextag is designed to reset original factory keys. In my experience, that has worked perfectly.

hextag can reset a few china keys too but not all, its just annoying it locked a few keys without programming them that’s all.

 

Part 4: HEXTAG By Microtronik make a key with cgdi BMW

I use hextag by Microtronik with cgdi BMW. I don’t particularly trust cgdi for downgrade, so I read out CAS with hextag and make all keys from dump. Works great. I really trust the hextag to safely read all cas modules, plus it can reset keys.
I’m also loving the DME features, but I really hope they keep the price reasonable.

 

Part 5: Hextag by Microtronik update / subscription:

Question: I’d like to be clear. If I buy this tool and if I don’t pay $350 next year can I use hextag to read and program cas2-4 + and reset the keys?

Answer: yes only cloning/tuning feature you need to purchase the license, all other features in hextag are lifetime free.

 

Part 6: HexProg 1.0.14 Ecu Cloning features and update cost:

Question: Hextag no good. everything throws ref errors. always in contact with support. has 3 versions of EDC17CP14 and none work. Hextag in my instance Does not work on Windows 7 both 32 and 64. Had to install on Win 10. Comes without 12 Volt power supply and needs to be specific with 3 AMP. So out of the box you come limited for few months with Cloning version and missing power supply. Key reset only for few makes and models.

Talk About My VXDIAG VCX NANO GDS2, Tech2Win (Diagnosis Only, Not Reflashing/Programming)

After rummaging around on forums for some time, talking and communicating with several folks from this forum and elsewhere, I concluded that I would try a Chinese clone MDI setup if I could nail the complete thing down for $300 or less. One of the goals was to not have to buy a subscription to any services. My purpose was to have a MDI dealer-level system for diagnosing and 2-way testing/service functions – I was not interested in reflashing or programming modules.

VXDIAG VCX NANO GDS2

What I ended up buying was a refurbished HP Elitebook laptop (8 GB memory, 500 GB hard drive, Intel I5 dual core), and a VXDiag VCX GM (VCI, SAE J2534 compatible, for GM GDS2 and Tech2Win) which came with software and drivers. These things are all over Amazon and elsewhere.

First, this setup duplicates the Tech 2 functionality, and is called Tech2Win, and appears to be the same software GM uses. The last model year the Tech2(Win) is used for is 2013, with some earlier model years excluded due to going to the newer MDI. The Tech2 functions on Corvettes up throuh and including model year 2013. The Tech2Win application runs on native Windows 7 or 8. Some have claimed it runs on later versions of Windows as well. The VXDiag people indicate Windows 7 or 8 only.

Second, the product also provides MDI/GDS2 diagnostics, very similar to what the dealer uses but without the module reflashing/programming. The Nano comes with drivers for Tech2Win and MDI, and has a ‘cracked’ version of GDS2 which runs as a VMWare virtual machine with XP. They provide a copy of the free VM Player to run the cracked software on any Win 64-bit platform, including the above Win 7 /8 machine, and I have confirmed it also runs as a VM on a Win 10 machine.

So, if you have a need for both a Tech 2 and a MDI system without the reflashing functions, this appears to be the way to go as one PC and VCI (the Nano) is used for both.

Not the easiest to install and get running. The Tech2Win setup in Native Windows was pretty easy and the interface on the PC looks identical to the native Tech2.

Getting MDI/GDS2 to run using VMware was more difficult. VXDiag provides a VM player, and the WinXP/GDS2 virtual machine file. Should be pretty easy to load and go, but I could not get it to work with the provided VM Player. Another forum member noticed my comments about this in the C6 forum and worked with me to get to a slightly altered setup using a copy of VM Workstation Pro Player instead of the provided VM Player. With a few tweaks to settings we got this up and running. I would still like to get this running on the original player as it is freeware and the one I’m using is good for a trial period only, but I’ll work on that in the near future.

I spent an hour today poking around in the brains of my C7 with the MDI/GDS2 software. It’s indeed impressive the amount of data and access the tool offers. Well worth the cost ($295 total) and effort in the end.

Seeing that the Nano is J2534 compatible, I believe if one had a GM subscription to accomplish reflashing and programming new calibration files, this device would work in place of an actual Bosch MDI VCI – it appears that several folks have published Youtube videos doing exactly that.

There is only one executable file on the CD-ROM.
Double-click “AbritesCommanderSetup.exe” to start the installation.
Do not plug the USB into the computer during the installation.

How to use SVCI 2020 / SVCI 2019 Quick Start Software?

SVCI 2020 Quick Launch Software has 42 shortcut icons and SVCI 2019 has 39 shortcut icons. Left-click the icon to launch the corresponding software. Compared to the quick launch of SVCI 2018, the activation dialog is not displayed after clicking the icon.

1.Tap “Home” button to choose “ES File Explore”.

2.Click on “Home” and then “DP” folder.

3.After entering the “DP” menu, choose the SN No. file 9514XXXXXXXX–FUNCTION–MILEAGE,

At the bottom of this file, there will be a “en.cfg”, find and delete it.

 

4.Re-start obdstar x300 dp plus.

 

5.Open APK, enter “upgrade” menu, then choose any of mileage correction software, download it.
